During the Interview

So you are there at last, and here’s your chance to really shine and prove that you are the right candidate for their job. Before you leave home for your interview, make sure you have reviewed and digested the following advice to help you on your way:

  • Always greet your interviewer with a firm and positive handshake and remember to smile

  • Think about your body language – remember that nodding and making eye contact on a regular basis are both positive signs that you are paying attention and listening. Always sit upright and never slouch back in your chair, maintaining a confident and relaxed pose

  • Pay attention to each question that is asked and make sure that you answer that specific question, relating your answer to the job you are applying for. Be honest and direct, promoting your skills and potential and  showing interest and enthusiasm at all times

  • Avoid simple” yes” and “no” responses, expanding where possible to make your point

  • Listen to the interviewer, and if you don’t understand a question, then say so. If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t be afraid to say  or ask for further clarification

  • Be positive about your reason for leaving your previous positions, quantifying the confidence that other employers have had in you

  • Always avoid speaking negatively about previous employers or colleagues

  • Make the position you are interviewing for your main objective

  • Don’t talk over or interrupt the interviewer

  • Don’t be put off by pauses from the interviewer, and equally important, don’t be afraid to pause yourself so that you can think about a question before responding

  • Ask intelligent and searching questions
